What is Cialis?
Cialis is an oral prescription drug prescribed for mild, moderate or severe
erectile dysfunction. It has advantage over other drugs as its efficacy
lasts up to 36 hours and takes as fast as 30 minutes to work for patients
taking the drug. It helps by improving the ability to get and keep an
erection, ability to complete sexual intercourse, provides erection hardness
and satisfaction with sexual intercourse. It can also be taken, as approved
by the doctor, by patients who have diabetes or hypertension.
Results may vary from patients taking the drug, but Cialis is clinically
proven for most men with ED. Tadalafil is the generic name of Cialis.
How is taken?
Follow your doctor’s directions when taking this medication. Ask
your doctor is you need additional information about this medication.
Take Cialis with a full glass of water and when needed before a sexual
activity. Cilais is not recommended to be taken more than the prescribed
amount.
Important Information:
• If you experience dizziness, nausea or angina (chest pain, numbness
and tingling in the chest, arms, neck or jaw) while engaging in sexual
activity, stop the sexual activity and consult your doctor.
• Get emergency help and call your doctor right away if you experience
an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours. A prolonged erection can
cause severe damage to the penis.
• Avoid taking grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Sildenafil.
This can cause potentially dangerous side effects. Talk to your doctor
about the use of this fruit along with your medication.
• Do not take with excessive amounts of alcohol. This can intensify
symptoms like headache, dizziness, increased heart rate and low blood
pressure.
• Do not take grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
This can cause an interaction and lead to adverse side effects. Discuss
with doctor about the use of this fruit along with your medication. Do
not alter the amount of this fruit or juice in your diet without consulting
your doctor first
• Tell your doctor if you are taking any nitrate drug for chest
pain or heart problems such as nitroglycerin, recreational drugs like
nitrite and alpha blockers. Taking any of these medications with Cialis
can cause excessively low blood pressure, and can lead to dizziness, fainting,
stroke or heart attack.
• Before taking Cialis, it is important to let your doctor know
if you have or have had a history of heart attack, stroke or arrythmias
(irregular heartbeat); heart failure; coronary artery disease; angina;
high or low blood pressure; liver or kidney problems; blood problems such
as sickle cell anemia or leukemia; bleeding disorder; stomach ulcer; retinitis
pigmentosa; penal deformities like Peyronie’s disease; any condition
that leads to prolonged erection like bone marrow tumor, sickle cell anemia
or leukemia. You may be advised by your doctor to take a lower dosage
amount or be monitored at a regular basis.
• Make sure you inform your doctor if you are taking another drug
for impotence like alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon).
You may be given lower or adjusted doses or require special monitoring.
• Cialis is not recommended to be taken by women, although it belongs
to FDA category B, which may not cause harm to an unborn infant. It is
not also known if it passes into breast milk.
• If you are over 65 years of age, make sure to consult your doctor
first before taking this medication. Your doctor can give you the specific
dose amount for you.
• Before taking Cialis, you need to mention to your doctor of any
other prescription or non-prescription drugs you are taking such as:
o Any other drugs for impotence
o Entibiotic erythromycin
o Antifungal medications
o HIV medications
Side Effects
Common side effects of Cialis include headache, upset stomach, back pain,
muscle aches, flushing, and stuffy or runny nose. These would usually
last for a few hours. Back and muscle pains are usually felt 12-24 hours
after the medication is taken, and is relieved after 48 hours. Contact
your doctor just in case any of these symptoms worsen or are aggravated.
Cialis can also cause rare event of priapism (prolonged erection lasting
about 4 hours). Seek medical intervention immediately to prevent any long-term
damage.
There had been reports of loss of eyesight or NAION (non-arteritic anterior
ischemic optic neuropathy) after taking Cialis. But it is not really clear
if Cialis is the cause of this type of vision loss. Discontinue the use
of this medication if you experience a loss in your vision and get medical
attention right away.
