What is Sildenafil Citrate?
Sildenafil is a treatment drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) that relaxes
the penal muscles. It allows an increased blood flow to the penis thus
is necessary to achieve and maintain erection.
Important Information
" Be sure to let your doctor know if you are taking any nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems such as nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, Minitran, Deponit, Transderm-Nitro, others), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket).
" Before taking Sildenafil, inform your doctor if you have or have had a history of heart attack, stroke or arrythmias (irregular heartbeat); heart failure; coronary artery disease; angina; high or low blood pressure; liver or kidney problems; blood problems such as sickle cell anemia or leukemia; bleeding disorder; stomach ulcer; retinitis pigmentosa; penal deformities like Peyronie's disease; any condition that leads to prolonged erection like bone marrow tumor, sickle cell anemia or leukemia. You may be advised by your doctor to take a lower dosage amount or be monitored at a regular basis.
" Make sure you inform your doctor if you are taking another drug for impotence like alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon). You may be given lower or adjusted doses or require special monitoring.
" Sildenafil is not recommended to be taken by women, although it belongs to FDA category B, which may not cause harm to an unborn infant. It is not also known if it passes into breast milk.
" If you are over 65 years of age, make sure to consult your doctor first before taking this medication. Your doctor can give you the specific dose amount for you.
" Before taking Sildenafil, you need to mention to your doctor of any other prescription or non-prescription drugs you are taking such as:
o any other drug used to treat impotence, such as alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin, others);
o the antibiotic drugs clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E-Mycin, Eryc, Ery-Tab, others), or troleandomycin (TAO);
o an antifungal medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral);
o the HIV medications amprenavir (Agenerase), delavirdine (Rescriptor), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), ritonavir (Norvir), or saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase);
o cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB);
o phenobarbital (Luminal);
o carbamazepine (Tegretol) or phenytoin (Dilantin); or
o rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate) or rifabutin (Mycobutin).
How is Sildenafil taken?
Sildenafil should be taken according to the doctor's prescription.
Ask your doctor if you do not understand any of the. instructions in your prescription guide.
Take each dose with a full glass of water. Sildenafil can be taken anywhere from half an hour to four hours before sexual activity. Normally, it is taken an hour before.
The medication can only help achieve erection when coupled with sexual stimulation. Taking the pill alone will not produce an erection. Follow your doctor's directions when taking this drug.
As much as possible, do not take high-fat meal after taking Sildenafil. It may take a longer time for the drug to start working.
Sidenafil is not recommended to be taken more than once a day.
If you experience dizziness, nausea or angina (chest pain, numbness and tingling in the chest, arms, neck or jaw) while engaging in sexual activity, refrain from continuing and consult your doctor.
Get emergency help and call your doctor right away if you experience an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours. A prolonged erection can cause severe damage to the penis.
Avoid taking grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Sildenafil. This can cause potentially dangerous side effects. Talk to your doctor about the use of this fruit along with your medication.
Storage
Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Always keep the container cap tightly closed and keep away from the reach of children.
Overdose
Seek medical attention as soon as possible in an event of an overdose. Signs of overdose are likely to include: chest pain, dizziness, irregular heart rate, and swelling of the ankles and legs.
Side Effects
Stop taking the medication and seek medical help right away if you begin to experience any of the following serious side effects:
" an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
" chest pain or an irregular heartbeat;
" swelling of the ankles or legs;
" shortness of breath;
" prolonged or severe dizziness;
" a prolonged (lasting longer than 4 hours) or painful erection; or
" dizziness, nausea, or angina (pain, tightness, discomfort, numbness, or tingling in the chest, arms, neck, or jaw).
As with any other drug, Sildenafil can have common side effects. Continue taking the medication but be sure to consult doctor right away if any of these symptoms begin to worsen or aggravate.

" mild dizziness;
" headache;
" nasal congestion;
" diarrhea;
" temporary blue tint in vision or other vision abnormalities; or
" itching or a rash.
